THE NORDIC REGION: AN EMERGING POWERHOUSE IN THE SUPPLY OF CRITICAL MINERALS FOR GREEN ENERGY TRANSITION

The Nordic region,
encompassing Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Greenland, and Iceland, is identified as
a crucial source of critical minerals and precious metals necessary for the
ongoing worldwide electrical energy transformation.
These resources,
including valuable metals, play a fundamental role in advancing clean energy
technologies, electric vehicles, and other green initiatives.
The wealth of minerals in the Nordic region rivals some of the world's most mineral-rich areas, such as Canada, the United States, Brazil, and Australia. Minerals like Rare Earth Elements (REEs)—for which Greenland boasts significant deposits—Copper, Lithium, Nickel, Cobalt, Zinc, Iron ore, Gold, Molybdenum, Niobium, Tantalum, Zirconium, Hafnium, and Fluorspar are all present in the region. For instance, the Kringlerne alkaline-hosted REE deposits in South Greenland rank among the most substantial known REE deposits worldwide.
Similarly, Copper
is found in significant amounts across the Nordic region, particularly in
Sweden and Finland.
Furthermore, Nickel and Cobalt, crucial for battery production, are available in the Nordic countries with major mining operations in Finland. Finland also emerges as Europe’s largest producer of Zinc. Other minerals like Gold are mined across the region, particularly in Finland, Sweden, and Norway, while Iron ore is abundant in Sweden. The presence of minerals like Molybdenum in Greenland and the potential deposits of Niobium and Tantalum underline the region's mineral wealth.
A noteworthy discovery is Europe's largest confirmed deposit of rare earth elements at the Fen Carbonatite Complex in Norway, boasting an estimated 8.8 million metric tons of total rare earth oxides.
These critical minerals are fundamental components in many exponentially growing clean energy technologies. For instance, Cobalt is crucial for the manufacture of electric vehicle batteries, particularly lithium-ion batteries, while metals like Copper and Nickel are essential in producing wind turbines and solar panels.
The Nordic region emerges as a pivotal player in securing a sustainable global supply chain for the electric energy transition, given its unique ability to provide nearly all critical raw materials deemed essential by the EU
Even though the wealth of the Nordic region is comparable to mineral-rich nations like Canada and Australia, it's worth noting that the full potential of the Nordic bedrock is still in the development and exploration stages.
The region's
commitment to cooperation and sustainability in future mineral production could
earmark it as a key player in the global supply of critical minerals for the
green energy transition.
